Igreja
de Nossa Senhora da Azinheira Oldest reference is 1273, but style indicates that its construction took place in the 12th century, according to tradition under the auspices of the Order of the Templars.
Nossa
Senhora da Azinheira (in Outeiro Seco), photo by J.B. César This
is a small Romanesque church located in Outeiro Seco, about 3 km north
of Chaves on a secondary road.
Despite the austere granite façade with few openings, it has
been called one of the most beautiful examples of Romanesque religious
architecture in Portugal. Around
the outside, under the tiled roof there are almost one hundred figures,
anthropomorphic and zoomorphic. Inside
there were once al fresco paintings, probably from the sixteenth century,
but most of these were
pulled off and taken in panels to museums in Oporto and Lisbon.
In 1986 some were returned and can be seen in the Chaves Museum.
