The Tâmega Lakes

The lakes formed by the Tâmega (Câmara Municipal de Chaves)

Just north of the district called Madalena and the new bridge there is a series of lakes where the river has spread out and practically stopped its flow.  These lakes were formed by sand extraction companies who over the years, without any type of license, went about their business of altering the course of the river.

It is one of the most beautiful and yet unknown areas of Chaves.  A dirt road follows the east bank and eventually reaches Vila Verde da Raia.  The gravel and sand extraction company has finally ceased all its activity after many years of degradation, leaving its obsolete equipment to rust along the river bank.  The city government is apparently unaware of this, or worse, hopes no one will see it.

The lakes, for the most part are still clean and surrounded by vegetation and with a small effort the rubbish could be cleaned up and this area turned into a spectacular parkland.
